Rise of The TMNT – Character Art Revealed

maxresdefaultEver since Nickelodeon announced that their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series would be coming to an end, fans have been eagerly awaiting a glimpse at the next iteration of our heroes in a half shell. Although we have learned a lot about Rise of the TMNT in the last few months, details on the actual character designs were sparse. That all changed today when Nick decided to host an awesome live event unveiling the first official character art from the new cartoon.

As you can see, the creators behind Rise of the TMNT have chosen to go with a very stylized approach. Sharp-eyed fans may note a bit of a nod to the artistic style that most viewers are familiar seeing from shows like Samurai Jack. Each character has very angular features with sharp and defined outlines. Although there are a few differences here and there, these turtles look very much like the heroes we remember from past cartoons, comic books and movies.

  • Raphael is the new leader of this group, and he’s looking pretty good! Image Source: Nickelodeon.
  • Leo is looking good as a red-eared slider! Image Source: Nickelodeon.
  • Donatello will let his technology speak for itself – perhaps literally! Image Source: Nickelodeon.
  • Mikey looks like he’s ready to have some fun and kick some butt. Image Source: Nickelodeon.

During the event, creators Andy Suriano and Ant Ward joined with Rob Paulsen to reveal key details about Rise of the TMNT. One of the most interesting revelations came when they announced that all four turtles would be a different breed. As Suriano pointed out, this allows them to give specific characteristics to each turtle which reflect the actions and behaviors of the breed they represent. For instance, Michelangelo is going to be a box turtle with the ability to hide his body in his shell.

In addition to the turtles, we also got the chance to see both April O’Neil and Master Splinter. Although the fans had questions about April’s bat, I’m personally very happy to see a version of her that is ready to kick butt from the get go. When it comes to Splinter, it’s clear that they’ve taken an entirely different approach with the character. During the live event, Eric Bauza provided a taste of what his Splinter sounds like to go with the artwork. All I can say is he had me in stitches with just one off-the-cuff line.

  • April O’Neil has a new look and a new weapon! Hopefully we’ll get to see her use that bat to take down a few bad guys! Image Source: Nickelodeon.
  • Splinter may be a bit smaller than usual, but he could definitely pull a Yoda and reveal a surprising amount of strength. Image Source: Nickelodeon.

If you’re still feeling unsure about Rise of the TMNT, just know that you are not alone. Although there was a lot of positive feedback throughout the live reveal, several fans were either frustrated or unhappy with what they were seeing. Ultimately, I feel like we need to wait this one out and see what Nickelodeon produces later this fall. Everyone attached to this show is incredibly talented, and I’ve got to believe that they know what they are doing.

This may be a wildly different take on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but there’s nothing inherently wrong with that. If past iterations have taught us anything, it is that there are several different versions of the turtles spread across several different dimensions. In other words, there is no one “correct” version of our half-shelled heroes, and this is just what they happen to look like in one specific dimension. By the way, this also means that there’s always a chance we’ll see previous versions of the turtles make a comeback in a crossover episode!

Say what you will, but I am personally very impressed with this character art. I’m also impressed that our own Machelle Noel managed to answer one of the toughest trivia questions asked during the event! Even though she was a bit nervous during some of the games they played, Machelle definitely held her own and we’re proud to count her as one of the crew. If you want to see what she was up to with Andre Meadows of Black Nerd Comedy, make sure to go back and watch the full event on Facebook while it’s still available!

WonderCon 2018: Eric Bauza

As our time ran out with the good people of Unikitty we thankfully got a few minutes with voice actors Eric Bauza and Roger Craig Smith about not just their role on the show but also their upcoming work on Batman: Ninja. We truly valued this one because of the fun that these guys have when talking about all the quirkiness of the show as well as answer a few miscellaneous questions. Who doesn’t love to hear about a voice actor’s favorite pizza toppings and the preference of chocolate, right?

Voicing Master Frown Eric Buaza talks about how it’s easy to voice a character who’s voice is similar to his own and tells us that he enjoys the classic pepperoni dot on his pizza. Roger Craig Smith who voices both Hawkadile and Richard appreciates how different the two characters are from one another but actually prefers the healthier option of veggies on his pizza. Moving into Batman: Ninja Bauza described how his role as 2 Face actually taught him how hard it was to flip a coin oddly enough but Smith, who voices the caped crusader, tells about the honor of voicing Batman. Bauza also says it is a dream come true so be sure to not only tune in for Unikitty but also be on the lookout for the visually stunning Batman: Ninja.

WonderCon 2017: Greg Cipes

Probably my most favorite of all the Teen Titans is Beast Boy so it was incredible to be able to listen to Greg Cipes talk about voicing the green googly-eyed shape shifter. As we see the fashionably dressed Cipes with his dog Wing Man we truly get a feel for how invested he is with the character. Expressing a true love for animals and surfing it’s really hard to not find an immediate liking towards the guy who really is trying to use his role for the betterment of those who can’t fight for themselves. We got into talking about Beast Boy but also about Cipes’ surfing habits and his other projects that revolve around his humanitarian efforts so listen carefully and you may get a lot more than Teen Titans GO!.

While Cipes is here for Wonder Con he simply says that he is here to celebrate and promote life for all and how Beast Boy who constantly shifts from various animal forms allows him to do so. Fair treatment towards animals is very important to Cipes just as the 200th episode was where Cipes actually got to talk to Beast Boy in the show. We also learn that Cipes is a big wave surfer who has actually caught waves with dolphins, an experience not many surfers have the privilege of getting. Also highlighting on his project Un Amor tries to provide support for homeless humans as well as animals will be directly support by a new album from Cipes called Green Man so be sure to stay tuned for those that surround the Teen Titans GO! star.

Huge TMNT Announcement Coming February 1st

Even though it has only been a few months since Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was taken off the air, they have already revealed several important details about the next cartoon in the franchise. We’ve seen the new logo and we know about some of the new voice actors attached to this project, but Nick has yet to unveil any artwork from Rise of the TMNT. Thankfully, that’s all about to change during a special event taking place in just a few days.

Late last week, Nickelodeon made the first announcement about this event on their @TMNT Twitter account. As you can see, they intend to reveal the character art for Rise of the TMNT during a Facebook Live event on February 1st at 1pm EST. As if that weren’t awesome enough, we can now officially reveal some of the people who will be on hand to talk about this artwork (and potentially other revelations) during this special occasion.

This Rise of the TMNT event will be hosted by none other than Eric Bauza, the actor who gave a voice to Tiger Claw in Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Considering that Bauza will also be providing the voice of Splinter in this new cartoon, he may actually be the perfect host for such an announcement. Kevin Eastman will also be there to offer his own thoughts on this new interpretation of the characters that he co-created with Peter Laird.

During this Facebook Live event, you can also expect the appearance of Rob Paulsen, Ant Ward and Andy Suriano. All three of them will be working behind-the-scenes to create a TMNT cartoon that fans will enjoy. In addition to all of these incredible creators, Nickelodeon has also reached out to super-fans Andre Meadows and Machelle Noel to provide their own thoughts on this Rise of the TMNT character art.

Sharp-eyed viewers will recognize Andre not only from Black Nerd Comedy, but also from all of his work as a host during several TMNT panels. Machelle also has an impressive history interviewing people like Eric Bauza, Rob Paulsen and even Kevin Eastman. Needless to say, you couldn’t have chosen two better shellheads to ask questions about Rise of the TMNT during this very special announcement.

With so many notable people attached to this awesome event, it’s safe to say that Thursday is going to be an important day for TMNT fans. Keep your eyes peeled to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Facebook Page to see the latest design for our heroes in a half shell on February 1st at 1pm EST.

SDCC 2017: Interview w/ The Cast

San Diego Comic-con 2017 was a blast, but it was also somewhat bittersweet. While we once again got the opportunity to see the cast and creators of Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, it was with the knowledge that they were there to talk about the final season of the show. We still don’t know if any of them will be brought on board for the new series, but that didn’t stop them from talking turtles with us! We sent Machelle Noel (AKA April O’Neil) of GeekRockTV to the convention to speak with the creative minds behind this franchise and ask them a variety of questions about our heroes in a half shell.

During this SDCC interview, we heard from Kevin Eastman, Ciro Nieli, Rob Paulsen, Greg Cipes, Eric Bauza, Stan Sakai and Yuki Matsuzaki. Although the subject of Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles did come up, all Ciro Nieli could say was that it wasn’t his show and he was passing on the reigns to a new creator. It’s definitely sad to see him leave the franchise, but he seems genuinely appreciative of the opportunity he was given. Nieli and his fellow shellheads all seem very upbeat about the new animated series, and that’s definitely a good sign.

Kevin Eastman also spoke up, expressing that he was happy to see the network give Nieli and his fellow creators an opportunity to have some fun with the final season. Considering the fact that they were able to bring Usagi Yojimbo into the universe and there are plans for a three-episode crossover with the 80’s turtles later this year, it’s safe to say that Nickelodeon has indeed provided a wonderful send-off for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

In addition to this interview, Machelle also spoke with some of the most well known actors behind the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers – Jason David Frank and Walter E Jones. You may remember them as the Green Ranger and Black Ranger, but they’re also fans of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. When asked about why both franchises tend to draw the same loyal viewership, Jones suggested that it was a love of martial arts that binds both fan communities. Jason also mentioned the turtles, noting that fans would always confuse the franchises at the time he was working on Power Rangers. He also enjoyed the crossover event, indicating that it was very cool and he loved the TMNT at the time.

These interviews were a lot of fun to watch and you can tell that they were pretty fun to conduct as well. In addition to the nerdy discussions, we also get to see co-host Jimmy Blu Mendez taking part in the festivities. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to experience SDCC first hand, there’s nothing quite like seeing it through the eyes of a fellow shellhead.

Of course, conducting interviews isn’t always easy, so there were also plenty of bloopers which have been posted for your enjoyment. In this video, you’ll find plenty of excerpts from interviews related to hit TV shows and popular franchises such as Gotham, Supernatural, Flash, Krypton, IZombie, Riverdale, Teen Titans Go!, Justice League Action, Unikitty, Black Lighting, Supergirl, Once Upon A Time, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Power Rangers and more!

If you want to see everything else Machelle has been up to, check out her work on Facebook/Instagram/Twitter @MachelleNoelTV and @GeekRockTV. SDCC 2017: Power Rangers Talk Turtles

Back in the early 90’s, it wasn’t uncommon for fans of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to watch Mighty Morphin Power Rangers as well. Although the two shows weren’t exactly the same, they did share some similarities which appealed to both fan communities. In fact, they went together so well that Saban eventually had the Power Rangers team up with our heroes in a half shell. Although some fans were very critical of the crossover, it was still pretty cool to see the two franchises clash.

Perhaps that is why it was so cool to hear none other than Jason David Frank sharing his thoughts about the TMNT during an interview at SDCC 2017. Jason played the Green Ranger and has been a vocal supporter of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers franchise ever since. As a member of the original crew, he has a unique perspective on what it was like to be on the show while the turtles were at the height of their popularity. During the interview, he shared his thoughts about both properties:

“I used to really like the turtles, and we used to get compared to the turtles all the time. I used to be like ‘oh, I do a show called Power Rangers,’ and they’d be like ‘oh, like that cartoon Ninja Turtles?’ and I’d be like “no, man — we’re the Power Rangers… soon you will find out!”

It’s not surprising to find that some people would confuse the two franchises, but it’s nice to see that Jason took it in stride. During the interview, he also answered some other questions relating to the TMNT. Here’s a rundown of his responses:

  • His favorite pizza topping is extra cheese
  • He enjoyed the 2014 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie
  • He prefers the slogan “Cowabunga” over “Turtle Power”

Although Jason only spent a short amount of time talking turtles, we recommend watching the entire interview to hear his thoughts on other subjects such as life, faith and – of course – Power Rangers! Machelle Noel also had the opportunity to speak with Walter E. Jones, the actor behind the Black Ranger. He also had some interesting thoughts about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, denoting some of the similarities between both franchises.

Alternatively, if you want to know more about when the TMNT joined forces with the Power Rangers, feel free to check out a synopsis of the episode or see it for yourself in the fourth episode of Power Rangers in Space.

Special thanks to Machelle Noel (AKA our very own April O’Neil) for conducting this interview. If you want to see more of her work, check out @GeekRockTV and @MachelleNoelTV on Instagram. Alternatively, you can also check out an interview she conducted with the cast and crew of Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!

WonderCon 2017: Greg Cipes | Michelangelo

WonderCon is almost always an amazing experience, and we were fortunate to have a fellow shellhead on hand at the event this year. Machelle Noel (AKA our very own April O’Neil) of GeekRockTV performed interviews with a variety of actors while attending the convention, but her discussion with Greg Cipes may have been one of the most interesting. As you may know, Cipes plays the role of Michelangelo in Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and he had a lot of interesting things to say about the fifth and final season of this series.

One of the biggest revelations was that he has written the lyrics for an Ice Cream Kitty song which will soon get its own music video. He also revealed that the series will finish off with an epic 3 part story which will wrap things up quite nicely. Afterward, he dropped a not-so-subtle hint which may have answered one of the biggest questions we’ve had for several months when saying “you never know where I’ll pop up in the new show.”

Machelle Noel tried to get some more definitive information about this, but all Cipes would say is that the amount of involvement he has with Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will depend upon the fans. It would appear that Nickelodeon may just decide to make Greg Cipes a regular on the show if the fans show enough support for him. Regardless of what comes next, he tried to reassure fellow shellheads by stating that he’ll always be Mikey where it counts and he’ll always be a part of the fan base.

After asking these questions, Noel moved on to a quickfire round of sorts which produced some pretty interesting answers. Here’s a rundown of some awesome responses from Greg Cipes himself:

  • He owns a pair of nunchucks and practices martial arts
  • The first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie was his favorite
  • He prefers the animated series over TMNT comics or movies
  • His favorite pizza topping is Avocado (he is a Raw Vegan)

These were only a few of the more significant topics covered by Machelle Noel during the interview. If you’d like to see more, make sure to watch the whole thing in the video above. Alternatively, you can also check out her interviews with actors/actresses like Luke Perry, Rachel Kimsey, Wes Gleason, and Marisol Nichols in the video below. If you want to see everything else Machelle has been up to, check out her work on Facebook/Instagram/Twitter @MachelleNoelTV and @GeekRockTV.
